Quality you can count on – ISO9001:2015

Quality systems and why they matter
Achieving and maintaining the highest standards of quality is fundamental to delivering precision waterjet cutting services and CNC machining that our customers can rely on. Our commitment to ISO 9001:2015 underpins every aspect of our operation, ensuring consistent processes, continuous improvement and products that meet each customer’s exact requirements. Following our recent annual ISO 9001: 2015 surveillance audit, which resulted in zero non-conformances, we asked our Managing Director Paddy Lightfoot to share his thoughts on what quality really means beyond certification.
In this opinion piece, Paddy reflects on the role of ISO 9001 in driving continual improvement across the business, from refining our waterjet cutting services to enhancing our CNC machining processes. He also explains why quality isn’t simply about passing an audit, but about building a culture where consistency, innovation and customer satisfaction are embedded in everything we do.

Thoughts from our Managing Director
“Our quality system provides a structured framework for implementing change, and we’re continually making incremental improvements across the business, whether that’s waterjet cutting profiles or CNC milling products. That said, as any quality professional will tell you, there’s always a flurry of activity before an audit as we carry out those final checks to make sure everything is exactly as it should be.
What I do appreciate about audit, however, is the opportunity it gives me to reflect on everything we’ve achieved since the last review. From continuous improvement initiatives and system enhancements to creating more robust processes and taking a hard look at supplier performance, it’s a useful reminder of how far we’ve come. One improvement initiative over the last year was the design and manufacture of a device that provides an ‘air curtain’ of dry air that when switched on, surround the mini hopper that regulates the flow of garnet that is the power behind waterjet cutting. During times of humidity – previously we could experience fluctuations in the flow of garnet, resulting in reductions in the quality of the waterjet cut profiles. Usually unseen until the profile is removed, which can be a costly reject, this device has now completely removed this variability, improved consistency and reducing operator burden.
One thing I often tell new employees is that both “quality” and “ISO 9001” are frequently misunderstood.
Quality means different things to different customers. For some, the cleanliness of a component is critical. For others, it’s dimensional tolerances, while others place the highest importance on material traceability. At first glance, this can make quality seem like a constantly moving target.
The value of our ISO 9001 accreditation is that it ensures every customer receives the quality they require, consistently. Our internal processes are designed to capture, record and replicate each customer’s specific expectations, every time we undertake work for them.
That’s what the quality system really provides: a framework that enables consistency, repeatability and continuous improvement. We’re not perfect, but that’s what we’re striving for every day.
I often challenge our team with a simple question:
“If you were the customer, how would you want to receive this order?”
Quality systems can sometimes be viewed as an obstacle to getting the job done; a layer of administration or a straightjacket that forces people to work in ways they wouldn’t naturally choose. The challenge is ensuring that quality isn’t seen as a bolt-on activity or something we do simply because a customer demands it but is a genuinely embedded part of our business culture and an integral part of how we operate and deliver value, rather than just meeting an auditing requirement.
We recently passed our audit with flying colours, achieving zero non-conformances. A fantastic result and a credit to the whole Hydromar team. Well done, everyone!”
